I’m currently at that point in my life where lots of my friends are getting married, which is very cool for all sorts of reasons. But it also turns out to be incredible for business, as many have kindly hired me to be their wedding photographer! You may already have read my last blog post on Chaz & Cat’s wedding, which was very special to me, as they are both good friends of mine. Well, it’s a double whammy this week, as I had another very close friend’s wedding to photograph when my good friend Dan married the lovely Ruth.
Dan and I go back a long way to our school and college days, where we spent a lot of time creating music together in various bands. Dan is an extremely talented musician and singer/songwriter, and I can’t believe he hasn’t made it big yet in the music industry. (Maybe it was my bad drumming that held him back all these years..!)
Not only was I the official photographer for Dan and Ruth’s wedding, Dan also asked me if I would be one of his groomsmen too! Super-duper chuffed!!
Here is their story……
The wedding day started for me at Dan and Ruth’s house in Truro, where Ruth and the girls were getting ready. Being a close friend of both Dan and Ruth, I knew a lot of people at this wedding, so it was really cool to hang out and catch up with old friends while I was snapping away. (Usually at weddings I love it if people think I’m just another guest who happens to have a camera. In this case, I pretty much was!) The girls were great. Really relaxed, and lots of fun. Ruth herself looked just amazing.
The wedding ceremony was at St Agnes Church. Both Dan and Ruth’s families are from this area, so I knew the place meant a lot to both of them.
The confetti after the ceremony was pretty epic. Some of my favourite shots at a wedding happen in the chaos straight after the ceremony, when guests are throwing confetti, and hugging and congratulating the newlyweds. I find there are always so many warm and unplanned moments to document in that special time when everyone’s milling around. It was obvious there was plenty of love for Dan and Ruth.
After the church, Dan and Ruth held a fantastic marquee reception at Ruth’s mum’s house, just outside St Agnes. The sun was shining, drinks were flowing, and everything was sweet. Dan and Ruth were really keen to get a few more relaxed wedding day portraits around the farm. There were plenty of good spots for this, and the light was exceptional. I could have kept shooting all afternoon with these guys!
Big love and congrats to Dan and Ruth. I’m so pleased you guys asked me to shoot your wedding, and I hope I kept on top of my usher duties for you as well!
The Wedding of Dan & Ruth (Selected Stills)
The Wedding Venue – St Agnes Church
Having lived in St Agnes for four years, shooting back here kind of feels like a home gig. The church is always easy to photograph in. It has lots of space, and the big windows provide some lovely light. I’ve shot several weddings here now, and I can tell you that one thing I always love about this place is the anticipation of the bride’s arrival. The church is located right in the centre of St Agnes village, opposite St Agnes Hotel, so there’s always a crowd of onlookers standing around waiting for the bride to turn up.
The Wedding Reception Venue – DIY Marquee Reception
Dan and Ruth held the reception on their own private land, and they made it completely their own. They hired a marquee from Over the Top Marquees, and some awesome catering was provided by Beetham Foods, but everything else they put together themselves. A lot of hard work went into preparations beforehand, but it definitely paid off. An awesome day!
