Friends and colleagues often ask me . . . “What makes a wedding special to photograph?

This is always a tricky one to answer as there are special moments that stand out from each and every wedding I have photographed. But for me, what makes a wedding especially memorable is the people. Not the dress, not the venue, not the flowers, not the cake (although I do like my cake!) it’s always the people. I don’t just mean the bride and groom but all of the guests and everyone that is involved in the wedding from start to finish. The individual characters, the big personalities, not to mention the grandparents who are rocking the dance floor! One of the best things about my job is that I get to meet and hang out with new groups of people every weekend and more often than not, I go away from a wedding feeling like I’ve made new friends.

This leads me nicely on to telling you about the Gwithian Church wedding of Hannah and Mike. From meeting them for the first time, I knew they would be a great couple to work with.

Here is their story……

Hannah and Mike’s wedding was all about family and friends and most importantly the two of them! They got married on a super sunny day in May at Gwithian Church in Cornwall followed by a beautiful reception at the Carbis Bay Hotel near St Ives.

Hannah is a local Cornish maid and got ready with her bridesmaids and flower girls at her mum’s house a few miles from the church. Much of Han’s family got involved with making things and helping out prior to the big day, her mum Christine even made all of the bridesmaids’ dresses! Hannah admitted she was not so confident in having her picture taken, but as you can see she looked beautifully natural in every photo.

Mike is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. A teacher who loves horse racing, wears is heart on his sleeve and a big Oasis fan! Some of my favourite photos of the day include Mikes passionate speech at the reception and later on his air guitar and group hugs on the dance floor had me in stitches! Absolute legend.

This wedding was all about the friends and family coming together to party with Hannah and Mike. There was no shortage of smiles all day and you could feel the love around them. Loved getting to know this pair.

The Wedding Venue – Gwithian Parish Church

This was my first wedding at Gwithian Church and what a beautiful spot for a wedding. The church is self was full of character, lots of big beautiful stained glass windows created lovely light to photograph the ceremony as it unfolded. The church itself is based in the heart of Gwithian Village, just a stones through from Gwithian Beach which has ample photographic opportunities. In between the ceremony and the reception I headed down to the Gwithian beach to take a few relaxed portraits of Hannah and Mike using Godrevy Lighthouse in the backdrop. A place very special to Hannah and Mike I know the photos taken here will mean a lot to them.

The Wedding Reception Venue – Carbis Bay Hotel

Love this hotel to bits. I have worked here several times now and never fails to blow me away. The hotel sits above Carbis Bay beach and looks over towards St Ives and back up the coats towards to Godrevy Lighthouse. The views are amazing and regardless of the weather the colour of the sea here is always beautiful. As it was such a nice day, Han and Mike were to keen to get a bit more time on the beach so after the meal headed down with some of the guests to dip their feet into the sea! Happy days.
